Windscale Case Study

Background - the project to decommission Windscale’s Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor is the UK’s lead power reactor decommissioning exercise. It aims to prove that a full-size power reactor can be decommissioned safely, with minimum risk to the environment, using technology available today.

Brief - to remove scepticism, demystify the subject and showcase the expertise at WAGR to win similar business overseas.

Audiences have included local communities, stakeholders, influencers, the EC, energy-related politicians, the media and industry organisations.

Activity - a full range of communications including local, national and international media relations, conferences, a suite of literature and community relations.

Highlights have included special reports on ITN, a BBC Radio 4 documentary and feature articles in The Times and The Guardian.

Results - consistently the highest rated project in UKAEA’s own measurement of pr and and recognised as a communications showcase. The inter-active schools website has been approved by the National Curriculum for science key stage 4.
